Richard C. Ambridge

Richard C. Ambridge Jr., 48, of Allentown, Pa., died Sunday, May 12, 2001, at St. Luke's Osteopathic Hospital, Allentown, Pa. Mr. Ambridge was born on February 11, 1953, in Amsterdam, N.Y. He married Nancy M. Croll and they were married for 24 years.

Mr. Ambridge, a graduate of Gloversville High School in Gloversville, N.Y., was a maintenance supervisor for Town & Country Apartments, Hidden Village in Allentown for 10 years, and prior to this, he worked for B&K Management at Freedom Estates in Bethlehem for seven years.

His father is the late Richard C. Ambridge Sr., and his mother, Leila (Wells) Ambridge, lives in Gloversville, N.Y. He is survived by his wife; his mother; six sons, Todd A. Smith of Johnstown, N.Y., Clayton A. Smith of Bethlehem, Pa., John E. Smith of Hagaman, N.Y., Thomas C. Smith of Schnecksville, Pa., Rodney M. Smith of Allentown, Pa., and Richard J. Ambridge of Quakertown, Pa; two daughters, Nancy A. Sigley of Bethlehem, Pa., and Brianna Stratton of Gloversville, N.Y.; two brothers, Jerry Ambridge of Gloversville, N.Y., and Thomas Ambridge of Lorie, S.C.; one sister, Diana Carrese of Gloversville, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 15, at 11 a.m. at Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden St., Bethlehem, Pa., where calling hours will be held Monday, May 14, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will be at White Church Cemetery, Tamaqua, Rush Township, Pa. Memorial contributions in Mr. Ambridge's memory may be made to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) c/o Long Funeral Home.

Howard James Grover Jr.
Friday, May 4, 2001
Howard James Grover Jr., 59,, of Fieldstone Drive, Clifton Park, died suddenly Tuesday at his residence.

He was born in North Adams, Mass., the son of Helen Horan Grover of Lenox, Mass. and the late Howard James Grover Sr., and husband of Ann Marie St. John Grover. He had resided in Clifton Park since 1999 and was a graduate of Bryant College in Rhode Island, where he received a bachelor's degree in business.

He served in the National Guard at Ft. Knox.

Mr. Grover retired from GE Power Systems in 1997, where he had worked for 33 years, and was currently employed at L&D Associates in Latham.

He was a member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks, American Legion Post in Amsterdam, GE Elfun Society, National Rifle Association, and Nichol Fly Hunting Camp in the Adirondacks.

Howard was an avid gardener and expert wood crafter. He loved his Harley, his house on the Maine coast, his Lionel trains and collecting old miniature cars. He enjoyed cooking, and looked forward to hunting camp each fall. If you couldn't find Howard in the garden or on his bike, you could be sure to find him at a flea market. Howard was a loyal friend.

Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include three daughters, Lisa Michaud and husband Rich of Ballston Spa, Melinda Grover of Scotia and Diane Grover of Scotia; a brother, Edward Grover and wife Susan of Mayfield; his mother and father-in-law, Anna and Robert St. John Sr. of Troy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Donna St. John of Troy; Sr. Patricia A. St. John, CSJ of Albany, Vincent and Sharon St. John of Florida; and four nieces and nephews, Michelle VanValkenberg of Oneonta, Melanie LeClairche of Scotland, Nicholas St. John of Troy and Michelle St. John of Troy.

Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bryce Funeral Home Inc., corner of Pawling at Maple Avenues in Troy, where funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Church Hill Road in Crescent, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Daniel Everett Lesser

Daniel Everett Lesser, 90, of Johnstown, died Tuesday, May 1, at Lutheran Home in Southbury, Conn.

He was the husband of Dorothy (Oaksford) Lesser, his wife of 67 years.

Mr. Lesser was born on Jan. 27, 1911 in Johnstown, the son of the late Henry and Lena (Ilse) Lesser. Following graduation from Johnstown High School, Mr. Lesser sailed the world as a seaman aboard the freighter SS LaQuassak and then attended the University of Alabama, where he pursued his lifelong interest in business. He returned to Johnstown to run the Henry J. Lesser Glove Co., along with his father and two of his four brothers. Established in 1907, the company produced ladies' leather gloves and sold them in department stores and specialty shops throughout the country for nearly 60 years.

Mr. Lesser was a lifelong member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Johnstown, a mason and an avid outdoorsman.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Barbara Fisher of Woodbury, Conn.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place in Johnstown. Arrangements are by Munson-Lovetere Funeral Homes Inc., Southbury. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Elaine Seifter

Elaine Seifter, 75, of Hendersonville, N.C., died quietly Tuesday, May 1, at her home.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late Joseph and Priscilla Bronstein Goliger. She received her BA degree at New York University and a MA degree at New Paltz State Teachers College.

With an intense interest and the satisfaction derived from teaching children to read, she spent her career as a first-grade teacher in the Merrick, Long Island and Johnstown public schools.

Elaine had a long-time interest in music and was a fine amateur flutist. She played in several community orchestras and was an original member of the Connetones, the Connestee Falls Pop and Jazz group.

A former resident of Gloversville of 15 years, she and her husband moved to Brevard, N.C. in 1982. She was a past president of the Gloversville Chapter of Hadassah.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert A. Seifter; two sons, Lowell Seifter and his wife, Sharon, and Russell Seifter and his wife, Amanda; two grandchildren, Gabriel and Miriam; step-grandchildren, Ricardo, Roberto, and Roger; and her sister, Ramona Laurence.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Atagahi Park at Connestee Falls, Brevard.

Arrangements are by Thos. Shepherd & Son, Hendersonville.

Garth Barton Goodbread

Garth Barton Goodbread, 44, of San Diego, Calif., passed away March 4 in San Diego.

He was born on April 1, 1956, in Schenectady and attended Gloversville schools until he moved to Texas. He was a Navy veteran.

He is survived by his mother, Norma Dyckman of Corpus Christi, Texas; his father and stepmother, Barton R. and Joyce Goodbread of Johnstown; sisters and brother, Patricia Vandenabeele of Greenville, S.C., Debra Mason of Bennington, Vt., Barlaine Jackson of Johnstown, Brent Goodbread of St. Johnsville and Verda Marie Goodbread of Johnstown; aunts and uncles, Jack and Sandra Pawlowski of Mayfield, Marty and Joan Shields of Northville, Joel and Glenda Danforth of Oregon and Robert Danforth of Gloversville.

A private memorial service was held on March 9 in San Diego. Arrangements were by Telophase Cremation Society, San Diego.

Robert G. 'Bob' Manchester

RRobert G. "Bob" Manchester Sr., 64, of 5854 Route 29, St. Johnsville, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 3, 2001 at Little Falls Hospital.

He was born July 27, 1936, in Gloversville, the son of Azubah (Crannell) Manchester and the late Oscar Guy Manchester. Bob was a graduate of Oppenheim School and lived in the Lassellsville area for many years.

His marriage to Yukimo Kudo took place on April 28, 1958, in Tokyo, Japan.

Mr. Manchester was a United States Army veteran who enlisted on April 13, 1955, and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1963, with the rank of SP4.

For several years, Bob worked for Simco Tannery in Johnstown. Mr. Manchester was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Yukimo; his mother, Azubah Manchester of Gloversville; one daughter, Mimi Grouch of Camillus; two sons, Robert G. Manchester Jr., and wife Kathy of Oceanside, Calif., and Thomas J. Manchester and wife Chris of St. Joseph, Mo.; a sister, Jeanette Alkinburgh of Lassellsville; five brothers, Richard C. Manchester and wife Barbara of Lassellsville, Ralph T. Manchester and wife Barbara of Bleecker, James manchester and wife Betty of Gloversville, Roger D. Manchester of Texas and Daniel Manchester of Johnstown; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

He was pre-deceased by a brother, Oscar Guy Manchester Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family at Saratoga National Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Smith, Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. All memorial contributions may be made to Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home.
