Margie Evelyn Young Phipps

November 20, 1921 - February 7, 2004

Margie Evelyn Young Phipps, age 82 of Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation. Center, Sligo, Pennsylvania, formerly of Miller Street in Butler, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 11:45 A.M. in the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Apollo, Pennsylvania, Westmoreland County on November 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late James Edward Young and Ferne Wagner Young.

Mrs. Phipps was a homemaker and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

She was marriage to Robert Briggs Phipps, he preceded her in death on August 27, 1999.

Mrs. Phipps is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Darlene) Diller of Tucson, Arizona, three sons, Robert Briggs Phipps, Jr. of Payson, Arizona, William Randall Phipps of Salisbury, North Carolina, James Marshall Phipps of Chicora, Pennsylvania, a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Salisbury of Butler, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Olive Edna Roxburry Hulick of Prospect, Pennsylvania and Mrs. Wilda Stevenson of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania and also many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Phipps was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

There will be no public visitation and funeral services will be private. Internment will take place in Greenlawn Burial Estates Franklin Township, Pennsylvania. Arrangements are being handled by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001

Laurell J. Powell

September 18, 1911 - February 6, 2004

Laurell J. Powell, age 92 of Powell Road, Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away Friday, February 6, 2004 at 6:40 P.M. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Powell was born in Penn Township, Pennsylvania on September 18, 1911, he was the son of the late Clarence A. Powell and Eva Rowan Powell.

Mr. Powell was a self-employed beef farmer. He served as a justice of the peace for Penn Township for seven years. He also drove school bus for the Bauman Bus Co. for the Penn Township area for twenty-three years. In later years he was employed at the former Frank's Sunoco Service Station, which was located on Route 8. He was a member of Middlesex Presbyterian Church in America where he served as an elder. He also held at different times all of the church officers positions. He was a member of Butler Lodge # 272 F. &A.M., The Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of New Castle.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Tillie Claypoole Powell whom he marriage on April 10, 1935, one son, Donald L. Powell of Butler, Pennsylvania, one daughter, Mrs. Chet (Glenna) Carson of Dillard, Georgia, two grandsons, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter, one brother, Harry Watt of Brookville, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

There will be no public visitation. Funeral Services will be held at the Middlesex Presbyterian Church in America, 116 Church Road, Butler, Pennsylvania 16002 on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. with the Reverend Kevin Bowen, pastor of Middlesex Presbyterian Church in America officiating. Internment will follow in The Middlesex Presbyterian Church in America Cemetery.

The family of Laurell J. Powell suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be sent to The Middlesex Presbyterian Church in America, 116 Church Road, Butler, Pennsylvania 16002. Arrangements are being handled by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001.

Roy T. Plaisted

September 23, 1910 - February 5, 2004

Roy Thomas Plaisted, 93 formerly of Dutchtown Road, Butler, died Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 3:45 a.m. at the Rockdale Personal Care Home.

Born September 23, 1910 in Butler Township, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Floyd C. Plaisted and Nellie Marie Hammiel.

He was a mill clerk in the hot mill for Armco Steel/AK Steel. He was a member of Community Alliance church, active with his church.

Mr. Plaisted is survived by his wife, Wilma Geraldine Plaisted, whom he marriage on July 10, 1937, one son, Ralph D. Plaisted of Butler, Pennsylvania, one sister, Bertha Hollefreund of Butler, Pennsylvania, one grand-daughter, and one great grandson.

Mr. Plaisted was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

Friends will be received at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, February 8, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., on Monday, February 9, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend David Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions may be sent to Meals on Wheels, 218 East Jefferson Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001.

Irene L. Matson

June 30 1915 - February 4, 2004

Irene L. Matson, age 88 of Wesbury Community Home, Meadville, Pennsylvania formerly of Butler and Beaver Dam Road, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at 6:20 P.M. at The Wesbury Community Home.

Born in Butler, Pennsylvania on June 30, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Phillip David Taylor and Anna Jean Coon.

Mrs. Matson had been employed as a cook and waitress at Michael's Restaurant and at the South Butler Fire Hall. She was a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, and a life member of South Butler Fire Hall.

She is survived by her husband, Clair Matson of Butler, Pennsylvania, three daughters: Mrs. Bernard (Jane) Schaffner Jr. of Meadville, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Horstman of Butler, Pennsylvania and Mrs. Bruce (Carroll) Hadley of Williamston, South Carolina, four sons: Bernard (Buck) Birckbichler of Titusville, Pennsylvania, William (Bill) Birckbichler, Dennis Matson, and Gary Matson of Butler, Pennsylvania, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson and one sister.

Friends and family of Irene L. Matson will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2004 at The Thompson-Miller Funeral Home Inc. 124 East North St. Butler, Pennsylvania 16001.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.

Robert V. Hall

May 4, 1926 - February 3, 2004

Robert V. Hall, 77 of East Muntz Avenue, Butler, died Wednesday, February 3, 2004 at 5:25 a.m. at his residence.

Born May 4, 1926 in Evans City, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Ernest E. Hall and Frances Jones.

Mr. Hall was a sales representative for various steel companies. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church formerly a member of the choir and church councilman. He was an alumni of Butler High School class of 1944. He attended Westminster College. Mr. Hall was a former member of the Butler Barber Shop Quartet, now known as the Butler Notables. He was a former member of UCT. Mr. Hall was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and WW II where he served in the Pacific theatre. He was also a member of VFW Post 249 and American Legion Post #117, Butler.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Joyce G. Grenet Hall, one daughter, Mrs. Alan (Stacey) Noah of Butler, Pennsylvania, one son, Scott G. Hall of San Diego, California, two grandsons and one grand-daughter, one brother, Mark E. Hall of Butler, Pennsylvania, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his brother.

Friends will be received at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, on Friday, February 6, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the First English Lutheran Church, on Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend James W. Dollhopf officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First English Lutheran Church, 241 North Main Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001.

Graveside Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post 249, Joseph T. Black..

Beverly A. Haley

November 25, 1941 - February 1, 2004

Beverly A. Haley, 62 formerly of Dutchtown Road, Butler, died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 11:35 p.m. at Sunnyview Home.

Born November 25, 1941 in Butler, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Edward W. Scott, Sr. and Garnet Bauman.

Mrs. Haley was a homemaker. She was a member of Thorncreek Methodist Church. She had been an avid bowler with the Oneida Valley Bowling League.

Mrs. Haley is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Brenda) Neff of Chicora, Pennsylvania, three brothers, Richard (Scotty) Scott of Fenelton, Pennsylvania, Rodney Scott of Herman, Pennsylvania, Frank Elroy Scott of Meridian, Pennsylvania, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Haley was preceded in death by her husband William J. Haley, Sr., who passed away on June 15, 1996, a son, brother and sister.

Friends will be received at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, February 5, 2004 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Richard Feagin Officiating. Interment will follow in Evans City Cemetery.
