James M. Leader
LEWISTOWN - James M. Leader, 82, of 204 Bratton Ave., Lewistown, formerly of Newton Hamilton and Silverford Heights, Mount Union, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn.

Born March 5, 1918, in Altoona, he was a son of the late Roy A. and Effie (Ferguson) Leader. His wife, Sylvia L. (Chilcote) Leader, whom he married July 15, 1943, in Altoona, by the Rev. Walter S. Long, survives.

Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. John (Doris) Miller of Marion, and five nephews.

He was a 1936 graduate of Altoona High School and received his bachelor's degree in 1940 from Juniata College and his master's degree from Bucknell University. He worked on his doctorate at Penn State.

He was a teacher and from 1942-1943, he taught social studies at Bellwood Antis High School, Bellwood; from 1943-1947, he taught social studies at Oliver High School, McVeytown; from 1947-1950, he taught social studies at Derry Township High School, Yeagertown; from 1950-1953, he taught driver education in the Burnham-Derry Joint School District; from 1953-1954, he was principal of Burnham High School; from 1954-1968, he was assistant high school principal of Chief Logan High School; and from 1968-1979, he taught driver education in the Mifflin County School District, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mount Union, where he was a member of the Herman Smith Sunday School Class; served on the Administrative Board and on the Board of Trustees of the Junior High Sunday School Class and the Adult Sunday School Class.

He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and the Mount Union Masonic Lodge 688, F&AM; served on the Newton Hamilton Borough Council as president and mayor of the borough. He also served as treasurer of the Newton-Wayne Fire Co. and served as president of the former Mount Union Rotary Club.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home, 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon and the Rev. Frank Oessenich officiating. Interment will be in Alto Reste Park, Altoona.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Mount Union, PA.

Margaret A. Leahy
PORT ROYAL - Margaret A. Leahy, 84, of Port Royal RR2, died at 6:35 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born February 9, 1915, in East Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Ardie V. and Annie Jane (Swailes) Williamson. Her husband, George H. Leahy Sr., died Jan. 13, 1979.

Surviving are: children, George Leahy, East Salem, Fred Leahy, Honey Grove, Jack Leahy, York, Dave Leahy, East Waterford, Harold Leahy, Brunswick, Ga., Ken Leahy, Wrightsville, Mrs. James (Shirley) Diven and Mrs. Terry (Mary) Wheeler, both of Mifflintown, Mrs. Bill (Faith) Bowersox Stringer, Mattawana, and Mrs. Rick (Donna) Milliken, Port Royal RR2; 52 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Harry Leahy, and a daughter, Linda Ritchey Speicher, and was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

She was a member of the Senior Activities Center, Orange Street, Mifflintown.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Dennis Thompson officiating. Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home but family will not be present. However family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

J. Ivan Leeper
LEWISTOWN - J. Ivan Leeper, 90, of Lewistown, died at 7:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown.

Born June 22, 1909, in Johnstown, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Conway) Leeper. His wife, Lilly (Arentz) Leeper, whom he married in 1930, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Shirley Ann Tate, Lewistown, Mrs. William (Melissa) Ritter, Indiana, and John Leeper, Burnham; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

He was owner and founder of Leeper's Signs since 1923 until retirement in 1997.

He painted his first sign professionally at the age of 14. Throughout his career, he had been employed by the late Harold Cohen and painted show cards and posters for the local movie theater and by O.O. Orner Outdoor Advertising Co., where he helped with the construction of the Green Gables Inn and painted numerous oil paintings displayed throughout the building.

He was also a partner in the L & F Advertising Co. and in the Outdoor Display Co., where he erected and painted many billboards and signs in the Central Pennsylvania area. He also operated several commercial sign shops, specializing in show cards, truck lettering, gold leaf, electrical and neon signs and was assisted by his son, John who, joined him in business in 1972.

He was responsible for the large Christmas scenes displayed on Monument Square annually.

He was believed to be the oldest surviving member of the Brooklyn Hose Co. and was a past member of the Elks Club and the Lewistown Country Club.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed camping.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown. Interment will be in the Locust Run Cemetery, Thompsontown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any of the local Area Agency on Aging organizations.

Janet M. Leister
MCCLURE - Janet M. Leister, 63, of 488 Ertley Road, McClure, died at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 1999, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Nov. 7, 1935, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mary (Reeder) McKnight.

Surviving are: children, Mrs. Dale (Linda) Remensnyder, Petersburg, Curtis S. Leister, US 522 North, McClure, Mrs. William (Lori) Hostetler, Summit Road, McClure, and Mrs. Marlin (Norma) Wilson Jr., Frank's Lane, Lewistown; brothers and sisters, Ronald P. McKnight, Walden, N.Y., Robert McKnight, New York, Barry McKnight, Maybrook, N.Y., Mrs. Ray (Mary P.) Pry, Lewistown, and Samuel McKnight, New Paltz, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Douglas J. Leister.

She was a 1953 graduate of Lewistown High School.

She was a homemaker.

She attended the Paintersville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with Pastor George H. Mark officiating. Interment will be in the Alfarata Lutheran Cemetery, Lewistown.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jean P. Leister
GRANVILLE - Jean P. Leister, 97, a resident of Malta Home, Granville, formerly of 11 Ort Valley Road, Lewistown, died at 8 a.m. Sunday, March 5, 2000, at the home.

Born Feb. 6, 1902, in Milesburg, she was a daughter of the late Charles L. and Ella (Smith) Peters. Her husband, Jeremiah A. Leister, died Feb. 24, 1987.

Surviving are stepchildren, Grace Clark, Shippensburg and Mrs. Robert (Mildred) Wertz, Florida.

She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one sister.

She was a graduate of West Chester University and did post-graduate work at Bucknell, Susquehanna and Grove City colleges.

She retired after 37 years of service with the Mifflin County School District, having taught at the Burnham Elementary School. She along with her husband owned and operated Leister's Greenhouse, Ort Valley, Lewistown for many years.

She was a member of the Lewistown Presbyterian Church, a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 283, and a charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Bruce Hinderliter officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

John J. Leister
LEWISTOWN - John J. Leister, 57, of 628 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at his residence.

Born Sept. 10, 1942, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late John J. and Genevieve (Gay) Leister.

He is survived by brothers and sisters, Genevieve Stull and Floyd Leister, both of Ertley Road, McClure, Jay Leister, Lewistown, Edna Yetter, McClure, Harold Leister, Mabel Wagner and Darlis Fultz, all of McClure RR, and Gertie Wagner, San Antonio, Texas.

He was Tax Claims Bureau Director of Mifflin County for 20 years. He also worked part-time for Uni-Mart.

He was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, McClure; the McVeytown Lodge F&AM; the Harrisburg Consistory; the Lewistown Moose Lodge 143; and was former chairman of the Mifflin County Democratic Party.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 823 Dormantown Road, McClure, with the Rev. Clyde Singh officiating. Interment will be in Dormantown Lutheran Cemetery.

There will be no public viewing, but friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 823 Dormantown Road, McClure, PA 17841 or to Hope Lodge, 125 Lucy Drive, Hummelstown, PA 17036.

Mildred Emma Leister
RICHFIELD - Mildred Emma Leister, 79, of 224 Main St., Richfield, died at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Sunbury Community Hospital where she had been a patient since Jan. 28.

Born Oct. 18, 1920, in Snyder County, she was the daughter of the late Peter W. and Emma (Deitz) Kratzer. Her husband, Jerome Harry Leister, whom she married Dec. 31, 1937, preceded her in death on May 27, 1985.

Surviving are: sons, David E. Leister Sr., Richfield and Barry L. Leister, Mount Pleasant Mills RR1; a daughter, Lorraine E. Kantz, Winfield RR2; sisters, Erma Hackenburg, Middleburg and Irene Royer, Winfield RR 2; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgranddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, a grandson, one brother and one sister.

She was educated in the Snyder County rural schools.

She was an Avon Representative for many years, and prior to working with Avon she was employed at the McAlisterville Shirt Factory.

She was a member of Brown's United Methodist Church, Route 35, Cocolamus, and a member of Richfield Ambulance League. She was also a member of the Mount Pleasant Mills Civic Club, and was a treasurer and an active member of the Richfield Senior Citizens organization.

She was an avid Bingo player and accomplished domino player who enjoyed spending time with family.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Brown's United Methodist church, Route 35, Cocolamus with the Rev. Ronald E. Landis, pastor of the Cocolamus charge, officiating. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery, Richfield.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills.

Doris M. Leitzel
SELINSGROVE - Doris M. Leitzel, 74, of 301 W. Vine St., Selinsgrove, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at her home.

Born May 13, 1925, in West Perry Township, Snyder County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Florence (Ferster) Snyder. Her husband, the Rev. Celo V. Leitzel, whom she married May 30, 1953, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Lowell L. Leitzel, Oakland, Md., Lindsey L. Leitzel, Lockport, N.Y., Mrs. Donald A. (Lois L.) Moser and Mrs. Raymond J. (Laureen L.) Baldwin, both of Boothwyn; brothers and sister, H. Richard Snyder, Paul S. Snyder, Wade E. Snyder and Mrs. Adam (Luella S.) Fogle, both of Richfield; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Snyder in infancy and M. Charlotte Hilbish.

She attended the Crossroads Grade School in West Perry Township.

She was employed at the Shellenberger and Son Shirt Factory in Richfield from 1943 to 1953.

She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Richfield. She was a former secretary and president of the Pa. State Youth Council, a branch of the Pa. State Sabbath School Association of the Pa. Council of Churches.

She was a member of the Institute for Life Long Learning at Susquehanna University, a life member of the Friends Auxiliary of Penn Luth Village in Selinsgrove, the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the Susquehanna University Women's Association and the Upper Susquehanna Synod SHEM, an association of pastors' spouses.

She served as a volunteer for 25 years at the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg. She was a former secretary for the Mustard Seed, Selinsgrove and of the Church Women United. She was also active in the various Lutheran congregations served by her husband.

She was widely known for writing and reciting poetry for special occasions.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Richfield, with the Bishop A. Donald Main and the Rev. Andrew C. Weaver officiating. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Sunday and 1 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Arbogast - Leininger Lutheran Charge, both in care of Rev. Andrew C. Weaver, RR3 Box 25, Mount Pleasant Mills, PA 17853.

George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills, is in charge of arrangements.
