Ida Bethel

ODESSA -- Ida Bethel, 89, co-owner of Public Scale Co., died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at her residence.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Philip McClarty officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

She was born in Okay, Okla., and came to Odessa in 1935 from Kilgore.

Survivors: Son, Howard Bethel of Odessa; daughter, Judith Ann Walton of Evergreen, Colo.; brother, Jep Daniel of Seminole, Okla.; sister, Bernice Johnson of Waggoner, Okla.; sister, Laura Breece of Muskogee, Okla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

W.L. Carper

ODESSA -- W.L. "Tarz" Carper, 84, district superintendent for Phillips Pipeline, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

He was born in May 14, 1914, in Dennis, Kan., and came to Odessa from Borger in 1952. He was a Marine Corp veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors: Two nephews.

Salvador Matta

PECOS -- Salvador Pascual Matta, 61, a cook, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at his residence.

Rosary was said Friday night at Pecos Funeral Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at noon today at St. Catherine Church. Burial will be in Mount Evergreen cemetery. Arrangements by Pecos Funeral Home.

He was born in Balmorhea and was a resident of Pecos. He was Catholic.

Survivors: Sons, Salvador Matta Jr. and Gilbert Matta, both of Dallas, and George Matta of El Paso; daughter, Loraine M. Candelaria of El Paso; mother, Juanita Trujillo of Pecos; brother, George Matta Jr. of Pecos; sister, Corina Rule of Alamagorda, N.M.; and three grandchildren.

Lewie Montgomery

ODESSA -- Lewie Montgomery, 83, a retired owner and operator of Lewie Montgomery Trucking Co., died Thursday, May 28, 1998, in San Antonio.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip McLarty officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

He was born in Mount Ida, Ark., and was a resident of San Antonio. He was Presbyterian.

Survivors: Wife, Iwana Montgomery of San Antonio; son, Jimmy Montgomery of Dallas; son, Doug Manor of San Antonio; daughter, Patsy Hunt of San Antonio; sister, Betty Dowell of Glenwood, Ark.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Sheffield

KERMIT -- Maxine Sheffield, 71, executive secretary for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Kermit cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Strempke officiating. Arrangements by Cooper Funeral Home.

She was born in Waurika, Okla., and was a resident of Odessa for 44 years.

Survivors: Husband, Eldon Sheffield of Odessa; son, Bruce Sims of Lubbock; daughter, Becky Vincent of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Thomas Ambrose

ODESSA -- Thomas Paul Ambrose, 72, of Winters, a retired postal clerk, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Ballinger Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Glenn Shoemake officiating. Arrangements by Winters Funeral Home.

He was born in New York City and moved to Winters in 1992 from Odessa. He was Baptist.

Survivors: Wife, Patricia Ambrose of Winters; sons, Thomas Paul Ambrose Jr. of Irving and Philip Ambrose of Garland; daughter, Debbie Van Stavern of Midland; sisters, Rose Giambroni, Mildred Sola, Eleanor Hannah and Elizabeth Campagna, all of New York, Jennie Caloger of Pennsylvania; and nine grandchildren.

Mary Holt

SUNRISE BEACH -- Mary Helen Holt, 81, of Sunrise Beach, a homemaker, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, in Temple.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Mountain cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Gearald Holt officiating. Arrangements by Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Homes Inc.

She was born in Liberty and had been a resident of Sunrise Beach since 1971 after moving from Odessa.

She was Methodist.

Survivors: Mother, Bertha Brasfield of Llano; daughters, Mary Kirklin of Odessa and Syb Henson of Katy; son, Michael E. Holt; and six grandchildren.

Nita McGrady

CROWELL -- Nita McGrady, 68, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at her residence.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Crowell cemetery with Melvin Eubank officiating. Arrangements by Sullivan Funeral Home in Vernon.

She was born in Culleoka. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors: Husband, B.D. McGrady of Canton; daughter, Sherry Tuberson of Odessa; sons, Darrell McGrady and Wayne McGrady, both of Odessa; sister, Hazel Duncan of Dallas; brothers, Earl Eubank of Fort Worth and Ellis Eubank of Bill Shoals, Ark.; and five grandchildren.

Atilano Salgado

ODESSA -- Atilano Yanez Salgado, 30, of Odessa, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at his residence.

Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Luis Cepeda officaiting. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel.

He was born in El Pueblito, Mexico.

Survivors: Wife, Rosa Elia Salgado of Odessa; son, Tomas Xavier Salgado of Odessa; daughter, Angelica Salgado of Odessa; parents, Ruben Salgado Tarin and Josefina Yanez of Chihuahua, Mexico; brothers, Ruben Salgado and Juan Salgado, both of Tatum, Gerardo Salgado of Chihuahua, Mexico, Marco Antonio Salgado of San Juan de Urruta, Mexico; sisters, Maria Felix Salgado of Maclovio Herrera, Mexico, Rosa San Juan de Urruta, Mexico, Gloria Salgado, Yessenia Salgado, Ana Salgado and Belinda Salgado, all of Chihuahua, Mexico, and Yolanda Salgado of Torreon Coahuila, Mexico.

Fred Butler

BIG LAKE -- Fred Butler, 74, of Big Lake, a retired employee of Southwest Texas Electric Co-op, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at his residence.

Arrangements are by Richard W. Box Funeral Homes.

He was born in Eldorado and was a 41-year resident of Big Lake. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors: Wife, Sue Butler of Big Lake; daughter, Hettie Sue Froman of San Angelo; sister, Grace Duran of Roseburg, Ore.; brother, Ed Butler of Barnhart; and one great-grandchild.

Les Clements

HOBBS, N.M. -- Les A. Clements, 69, of Hobbs, N.M., a retired employee of Mobil Oil Company, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Griffin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eli Borden officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens cemetery. Arrangements by Griffin Funeral Home Inc.

He was born in Big Spring. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II and Army Corps of Engineers in the Korean War. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors: Wife, Johnnie L. Clements of Hobbs, N.M.; son, Keith A. Clements of Hobbs, N.M.; sisters, Christene Ellis of Longview, Mildred Johnson of Gladewater; and one grandchild.
