Paul Clifford Jenkins
ASHTABULA - Paul Clifford Jenkins, 80, of Pennsylvania Avenue, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at his home. He was born April 20, 1920 in Ashtabula, the son of Clifford and Lottie Jenkins and had been an area resident all his life. Prior to his retirement, he worked over 30 years for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company. A veteran of U.S. Army Air Corps, he served during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 943. Mr. Jenkins enjoyed bowling, camping, traveling, animals and the outdoors. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Eleanor (Lintala); and a son, Dennis of Ashtabula. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed; a sister, Thora Oliver; his stepfather, John Hawes; and his parents. Prior to entombment, a service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, North Kingsville. The Rev. Anthony Dusoof Faith Lutheran Church will officiate. No calling hours will be observed. Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 504 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004. Raymond A. Sweet
JEFFERSON - Raymond A. Sweet, 85, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was born Jan. 1, 1915, in Painesville, the son of Albert N. and Jessie M. (Wheeler) Sweet and had been a resident of Jefferson since 1941, coming from Painesville. Mr. Sweet was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving in World War II. He married Marjorie L. Ray on Nov. 27, 194, at the Jefferson United Methodist Church. Mr. Sweet was a 25-year employee of Ashtabula Gas & Oil Co., retiring in 1986 He was an avid golfer and bowler. Survivors include his wife; a son, Ken L. of Jefferson; and two grandchildren, Kimberly A. of Akrom and Christopher M. of Wichita, Kan. He was preceded in death be his parents and a brother, Allen. Service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Gordon Emerson, lay pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Jefferson. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 1 p.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Helen Bernadette Lininger
ASHTABULA - Helen Bernadette Lininger, 81, of Lambros Lane, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa. Born March 1, 1919, in Lewiston, Maine, she was a daughter of Joseph and Genevieve (Cormier) Cliché and had been an Ashtabula resident most of her life. Her survivors include two sons; a daughter; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister. She was preceded in death by a son; a daughter; a brother; and her parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, is in charge of arrangements.

Loren Brockway
CLARIDON TOWNSHIP - Loren Brockway, 81, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Heather Hill, Munson Township. He was born Aug. 8, 1919, in Montville Township, the son of Loren P. and M. Zora (Fitzgerald) Brockway. Mr. Brockway was an insurance agent, founding the Brockway-Bond Insurance Agency, Burton. He worked as a supervisor at Snapout Forms, Chardon, while beginning a career in insurance. He retired in 1988. He married Arline K. Metzger on May 17, 1941, in Chardon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II, Pacific Theatre, serving in the Philippines and New Guinea. He was a founding and active participating member of the Peace Lutheran Church, Munson Township. He was a member of American Legion Post 459 in Burton; past president, treasurer, and clerk of the former Claridon Elementary School System. Mr. Brockway took an active roll in both school and community sports for his children and other youth. He was a former member of the Claridon Township Zoning Commission and the township Board of Zoning Appeals. After retirement, he volunteered at Chardon Municipal Court. He is remembered by his family and friends for his storytelling and teasing, and his favorite pastime - a love for playing cards. He was an active participant in the monthly meeting of the "Over the Hill" gang. He is survived by his wife, Arline (Metzger) Brockway of Claridon Township; a daughter, Brenda Chapman of Claridon Township; three sons David L. of Claridon Township. Jerome R. of Jefferson, and Brian A. of Claridon Township; a sister, Patricia Kosmerl of Willowick; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Kathryn Albright and Lucille Corrigan. Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church, 12686 Bass Lake Road, Munson Township. with The Rev. Donald Heino officiating. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Burr Funeral Home, 16 South St., Chardon. Burial will be in the Claridon Center Cemetery, Claridon Township. Howard William Reed
LEESBURG, Fla. - Howard William Reed, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla. Born Jan. 21, 1917, in Dorset Township, he was a son of William and Mabel (Tuttle) Reed and lived most of his life in Kingsville Township before moving to Leesburg nine years ago. Mr. Reed worked as a Great Lakes; at Addressograph-Multigraph, Cleveland; and retired from Reliance Electric Co., Ashtabula, after 32 years. He was a member of The Life Community Church, Eustis, Fla., and a former member of the First Baptist Church, Kingsville Township; the "55 and Much-Alive" Club; the Kingsville Gypsies and the Reliance Electric Retiree Club. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; four daughters, Norita Evans of Largo, Fla., Carol Huey of Kingsville Township, Elinor Mihic of Timberlake and Janice Yambor of Dorset Township; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-great-granchildren; three brothers, Richard of Conneaut, Robert of Norwalk, and Raymond of Kingsville Township; and five sisters, Grace Kotnick and Mary Hatch of Kingsville Township, Frances Hatch of Franklin, N.C., Louise Scott of Newton, N.C., and Jeannette Kinkle of Naples, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 53 years, Lounetta (Stevens) in July 1990; a brother John; and a sister, Lillian Stevens. Services is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with the Rev. David Hines of Kingsville Baptist Church officiating. Gertrude P. Lyon
CHARDON - Gertrude P. Lyon, 90, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at her home. She was born Dec. 24, 1909, in Cleveland, the daughter of August and Matilda (Hass) Kashubeck. Mrs. Lyon lived in Geauga County for 51 years and lived in Chardon since 1974. She was formerly a resident of Claridon Township. She married Harve A. Lyon in Cleveland on Jan. 16, 1932. A homemaker, she was a founding member of Peace Lutheran Church, Munson Township. She loved to crochet and do other handwork. She and her husband owned and operated the former Hillside Store at the intersection of Mayfield Road and Taylor Wills Road from 1960 to 1973. Survivors include a son, Harve F. of Chardon; a daughter, Carol Dayton of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband on July 8, 1972. Service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with the Rev. Donald Heino of Peace Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Claridon Center Cemetery, Claridon Township. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Myron E. Long
WINDHAM TOWNSHIP - Myron "Marty" E. Long, 54, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna. He was born in Ravenna on Jan. 15, 1946, the son of Robert C. and Marjorie (Bell) Long . He was employed as a truck driver for Blair Cartage, Newbury Township. He married Donna Rush on Oct. 23, 1965. Mr. Long served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed hunting and riding his four-wheeler. He is survived by his wife and a brother, Dennis Long of Southington. He was preceded in death by his parents. Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home, Garrettsville, with the Rev. Carl Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Windham Township Cemetery, Windham. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

I. Stanley Kent
CONNEAUT - I. Stanley Kent, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at University Hospital in Cleveland, where he had been a patient for the last three weeks. He was born June 28, 1914 in Conneaut, the son of Irus C. and Nettie B. (Eaton) Kent. Mr. Kent was employed for 13 years in the boiler shop at the former Nickel Plate Railroad, and then worked as an installer at the Conneaut Telephone Company for 25 years. He was a member of the East Conneaut United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Moose Club and East Conneaut Firefighters Association. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren, sports, and woodworking. He was also a member of the East Conneaut Old-Timers, a monthly luncheon group. Survivors include his wife, Wanetta M. (Bates) Kent, whom he married July 2, 1938; a son, Robert S. of Toledo; and five grandchildren, Irus, Scott D., Michelle R., Jared A., and Adam M. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son at birth; two brothers, Clifford E., and Duane C.; and a sister, Theo M. Cole. Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. The Rev. Peg Welch of East Conneaut United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Grace L. Brail
AUSTINBURG ­ Grace L. Brail, 80, Austinburg, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born Nov. 27, 1920, in Ashtabula, she is the daughter of Walter and Edith (Macintosh) Bissell. Mrs. Brail married Stanley E. Brail who passed away Dec. 23, 1983. She graduated from The Ohio State University and was the secretary and bookkeeper for the Austinburg Co-Op. She was also a substitute teacher in Austinburg. Mrs. Brail was a member of the United Church of Christ of Austinburg where she volunteered as secretary and bookkeeper and also played the organ. She did bookkeeping for the Sam Wharram Nature Club. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Lake Farm Park. She played piano at the local nursing homes and was a literacy volunteer. She belonged to the Austinburg Garden Club, was involved in the local bird count and Cornell University Feeder Watch Program. Survivors include two sons, Richard of Saybrook, and Gordan of Trumbell; a brother Carl of Ashtabula; and two grandchildren, Jacob of San Antonio, Texas, and Michael of Trumbell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; her parents; and a sister, Margaret Runyan. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Center Cemetery in Austinburg Township followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Austinburg. The Rev. Gretchen Wagner will be officiating. A reception will follow. Memorial contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity in Ashtabula County, 4322 Park Ave., Ashtabula Ohio 44004. Stella V. Bee
MADISON - Stella V. Bee, 84, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Rae-Ann Geneva. She was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Larimer, Pa., the daughter of Stella (Neal) and Mark McMillen. She married Barney Bee in 1944 in Cleveland. Mrs. Bee worked as a press operator at Ohio Rubber for 25 years, retiring in 1979. She served in the U.S. Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in World War II, and was a member of the Willoughby American Legion. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and bingo. Survivors include two daughters, Betty R. Miller of Akron and Shirley Hynd of Madison; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1964; a son, Mark; a sister, Geneva Beck; and a brother, Neal McMillen. Service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison. The Rev. Ronald Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in Madison Memorial Cemetery, Madison. Felix T. Sawicki
ASHTABULA - Felix T. "Fritz" Sawicki, 77, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was born Sept. 20, 1923, in Peru Ill., the son of Anton Joseph and Mary Rose (Liss) Sawicki, and had been an Ashtabula County resident since 1979. Mr. Sawicki worked for the Interlake Steamship Company as a merchant marine until his retirement in 1988. A veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps, he served honorably during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965 at the rank of sergeant. He was a former member of the United Steel Workers, the Loyal Order of the Moose #547, the Army-Navy Union, the V.F.W. Post #4602, DePue, Ill., the American Veterans, LaSalle, Ill., and the Marine Corps League. He enjoyed his grandchildren, find-a-word puzzles, and listening to music. Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Sue (Helsley), whom he married Feb. 15, 1974; three sons, PO2 (SW) Luther L. of Great Lakes, Ill., Staff Sergeant Bradley T. of Okinawa, Japan, and Anton J. of Ashtabula; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Morar of Boardman and Mary Rose Sawicki of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Theodore M. Sawicki of Spring Valley, Ill. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Al; two sisters, Loretta Sawicki and Phyllis Spayer; and his parents. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Virgil V. Reeve of First Baptist Church will officiate. Glen E. Walker
MADISON - Glen E. Walker, 69, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Madison Health Care. He had been a resident of Madison for the past 10 years, coming from Painesville and Wanaque, N.J. He was born March 28, 1931, in Bruin, Ky., the son of Glen and Gladys (Evans ) Walker. Mr. Walker was a U.S. Army Ranger, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by City Cab of Ashtabula. He had been employed with the D-Con Company as a national sales manager. He was also the self-employed owner of Glenwood & Associates. Survivors include his wife, Dolores (Caplinger); a son, Glen Alan of Painesville; a grandson, Glen William Walker; a brother, James of Hurst, Texas; and two sisters, Lorene Siebold of Leroy Township, and Loretta Vandervort of Painesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his twin brother, Paul. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Potti Funeral Home, 2726 Hubbard Road., Madison. Edward L. Carlson
ORWELL - Edward L. Carlson, 92, died Sunday, Feb. 4., 2001, at Village square Nursing Home in Orwell. He was born April 26, 1908 in Francisville, Ind., the son of Charles G. and Caroline (Erickson) Carlson. An area farmer, Mr. Carlson was a member of the Orwell Presbyterian Church, a Grange member for over 50 years, an Orwell Township trustee for 12 years, and an Ohio delegate to the state Grange council. He enjoyed Grange programs, traveling, going to area sales, and calling square dancing. Survivors include his wife, Audra (Wallace) Carlson, whom he married Oct. 19, 1931; two sons, Ray of Orwell and Glen of Roaming Shores; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Cox of N. Bloomfield, Ohio. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alfred, Harold, Clyde, and Emory Carlson; and two sisters, Florence and Myrtle. Service will be noon Thursday at the Paine-Simpson Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell. The Rev. George Dauler of the Orwell Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Brownwood Cemetery in North Bloomfield. Calling hours will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Gail D. Skelton
ALLENWOOD, Pa. - Gail Diane Skelton, 52, formerly of Girard, Pa., died Sunday Feb. 4, 2001, at her home after an extended illness. She was born July 28, 1948, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Michael and Virginia (Cross) Barlow. On July 15, 1967, she married Dave Skelton. She was a graduate of Hampton High School, and attended art courses in Pittsburgh. She graduated key punch school, and was also a graduate of Williamsport Area Community College, having taken courses in restaurant management. Mrs. Skelton worked at Springs Manufacturing, Montgomery, where she had been employed for 11 1/2 years. She previously worked at City View Inn in South Williamsport for 11 years. She attended St. John's Methodist Church in Allenwood. Mrs. Skelton enjoyed her family, reading, cross-stitching, crocheting, layout designing, and painting Christmas decorations. She also enjoyed flowers, especially yellows and purples. She was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins, Steelers and Pirates fan. Survivors include her husband; her parents; two sons, William of Allenwood, Pa., and Robert of Wilmington, N.C.; two granddaughters, Shelby and Courtney, both of Allenwood, Pa.; four brothers, Ronald Barlow of Greensboro, N.C., David Barlow of Castle Rock, Wash., James Barlow of Chicago, and Michael Barlow of Las Vegas; three sisters, Jeanne Roche of Acme, Pa., Nancy Berlin of Columbus, and Sally Gibson of Butler, Pa. Service will be noon Wednesday at St. John's Methodist Church in Allenwood, Pa. The Rev. Max W. Furman will officiate. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Dale E. Joan Bernard
GENEVA - Joan "Lucy" Bernard, 64, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at University Hospital of Cleveland. She was born April 15, 1936 in Spangler, Pa., the daughter of Angelo and Bernadine (Artuso) Yanitelli. She married Anthony Bernard Feb. 28, 1956, in Patton, Pa. Mrs. Bernard was a homemaker. She enjoyed serving Sunday family spaghetti dinners, reading her Bible, and spending time with her grandchildren. She attended Geneva Church of the Nazarene. Survivors include her husband; four sons, Anthony Jr., John, and William, all of Geneva, and Ronald of Concord Township; two daughters, Ruth Ann Cuccaro and Linda Jackson, both of Geneva; 12 grandchildren; five sisters, Thomasine Freeman and Mary Pompa, both of Patton, Pa., Emily Petrakis of Modesto, Calif., Pauline Lacey of Willoughby, and Dolly Mangold of Cressen, Pa.; and one brother, Sam Yanitelli of Northfield, Ohio. She was preceded in death by one son, Daniel; her parents; and two brothers, Joseph and Frank. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Donald E Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva. James W. Kirby
CHARDON - James W. Kirby, 53, of Chardon, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind. He was born June 12, 1947, in Alabama, the son of William J. and Helen Kirby. He lived in North Carolina and had been a Chardon resident the past five years. He worked in the construction industry. Survivors include his mother, of Chardon; his wife, Marian Elaine of Chardon; a son, Jimmy Kirby; a daughter, Michelle Kirby; and a sister, Peggy Turner of Chardon. He was preceded in death by his father, in 1992. Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at the Speer-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville.
