Collins. BASEBALL ¦ The 1937 edition of the Blue and White Varsity Baseball Team is on its way to the diamond wars with its usual strength. With plenty of moxie and the Irish fighting spirit, this year's outfit stands an excellent chance to retain its toga of Western New York Scholastic Champion. But let us for a moment revert to last season. Paced by "Foggy" White's and Dan Boland's hitting, and the brilliant hurling of Blake, the "Marians" copped six wins while losing but one. The feature of the season was an 8-6 win over St. Joseph's of Buffalo, perennial W. N. Y. champions. This victory stopped a St. Joe's 46 game winning streak. St. Mary's won the city championship by virtue of a 13-3 clubbing of DeVeaux. This season's team proudly boasts Dan Boland, chunky, dependable receiver; "Fog" White occupies the initial sack and his brother Charlie is battling with Art Perez for custody of second. Joe Mann handles the situation at short stop and Bill Doyle, a newcomer but a "find," is stationed at third base to complete the infield. Lawrence Penele and Frank Toomey are the mound artists. The guardians of the outfield are -Punch" Cloutier, "Shanty" Hogan and Pat Carmody, all veterans. St. Mary's made its season debut with a sparkling 8-3 decision over Wilson High School. Toomey and Penele shared the pitching honors, striking out sixteen men between them and allowing but four hits. The "Irish" collected eight hits from two orange and black hurlers, bunching three of them in a big fourth inning to net six counters. Toomey and Doyle led the batting parade with two for four apiece; Penele, Cloutier and Mann each garnered two baggers. The remainder of the schedule is a stiff eight game setup but with the old "vim and vigor" the Saints should breeze through to another successful season. 59
