During World War I, the commanding
general of the American expeditionary
forces and the War Department issued
daily casualty lists from the overseas
operations to the major newpaper outlets
for public notification.
According to Robert Wilde, editor of the
European History section of About.com,
"there is no - and there will never be -
a definitive list of the casualties
inflicted during World War One".

What can a family researcher get out of
these files for their family tree?

- The fact that your ancestor had
  a military record
- The fact that he/she fought in
  World War I
- An approximate date of death or
  injury
- Was your ancestor a POW?
- Your ancestor's rank or job while
  serving.
- You may find a middle initial
  that you didn't have.
- The town where your ancestor lived.
- These lists are transcribed from old
newspaper clippings from the New York
Times, Chicago Tribune, and the Dallas
Morning News. Some of the lists will
  have additional information on locals
who were casualties. This type of
information will be found toward the
  bottom of the page.
